Submissions for the 2027 anthology are now open
BATTLEFIELD WRITERS – SUBMISSIONS INVITED
Submissions are invited for Caledonian Tales (working title), the fifth in a series of annual anthologies of short stories, poetry, and flash fiction, to be published in winter 2026.
We publish works by writers resident in Scotland or Scots by birth, upbringing or inclination. Writing can be on any subject but must relate in some way to Scotland. We have a maximum recommended length of 3000 words for short stories, 40 lines for poetry and 500 words for flash fiction. Authors retain all rights to their work(s). No payment will be made but each successful writer will receive a digital copy of the anthology.
Submissions can be in any genre. The only criterion is that it should be set in Scotland, be about Scotland in some way or reflect an aspect of life in Scotland.
The work must be entirely your own and produced without the assistance of generative AI. Work that has been previously published is acceptable as long as you retain the rights to publication and you state where and when it was published.
Submission is free and all submissions should be single-spaced. Short stories and flash fiction should be emailed to battlefieldcollective@outlook.comand poems should be emailed to battlefieldpoetry@outlook.com Please put either Poetry, Short Story or Flash Fiction in the Subject Line of the Email and include your name in the body of the email. You can submit to each category but only once per category, as long as you send a separate email for each submission.
The closing date for submissions is midnight on Sunday 31nd August, 2026. Please note that in the past we have been very lenient about incorrect spelling, punctuation etc. but it’s very time-consuming for the editors to have to make corrections. This year, we must ask writers to check their submissions carefully before sending – writing deemed to require too many corrections will not be accepted.
Submissions have grown in number over the years, we are therefore limited to the number we can accept. Writers of successful submissions will be notified of the editors’ decision by email by the end of Sepember 2026 and the list will appear on our web pagewww.battlefieldwriters.com
